Some people probably find the idea of a muse outdated, but we think it’s beautiful, because as women with so many complex sides and a variety of strengths and weaknesses, a powerful tool for personal growth is interacting with muses that mentor those various side. After all, you do become the five people you spend the most time with, so why not seek out the people that will add the most value to your life? Today we return to a woman who encompasses elegance and wildness, who possesses an aristocratic air with an undertone of freedom and craziness, and is unabashedly assertive. We previously shot Nada at her most playful on the sands of Half Moon Bay in our Superwoman Crush story, but for this editorial we asked her to show us what she wears to face the everyday challenges of her job as a neurologist. When the going gets tough and Nada has to pull long hours and tackle a variety of obstacles efficiently, she never fails to pull together a tailored, strong look that is both comfortable, edgy and 110% her. We are drawn to Nada for her complete refusal to be anything other then sharply incisive – she is the kind of woman who inspires us to worry less about pleasing everybody, invest less emotion in obstacles, and be unquestionably self-possessed.
What does confidence mean to you?
I have never considered myself confident and I still wouldn’t describe myself as confident. I think confidence is so multifaceted – you can be confident in your career, in your appearance and in your personality/social interactions and its a lifelong journey developing each of these traits. When you feel personally balanced, comfortable and happy confidence is inevitable.
You have such a strong sense of who you are. What advice do you have for other women regarding gaining that sense of being totally comfortable with themselves?
Focus on what makes you happy! Whether your hobbies, interests or even fashion style are mainstream or obscure. Being passionate about the things you love will instill a sense of comfort and confidence in who you are.
There is a lot of discussion about work/life balance. How do you maintain balance?
I’ve worked many 100-hour weeks in residency and I am so glad that’s over with! Now I try and make sure I make time for friends and family. Whether its planning dinners or weekends in SF I try and make the most of the days I have off. I try and travel outside the Bay Area at least once a month to visit family and friends.
How do you dress for a typical work day.?
I usually start with a pair of pants, and pair it with a shirt, either a button-down shirt – I love Equipment blouses, or if I’m feeling a bit more edgy I’ll go for a t-shirt, right now I have a few r13 t-shifts I like. I then pair that with a blazer, my go-to is a sleek Sandro black blazer, but if I want a little extra color I’ll go for a Stella McCartney patterned sweater. Then shoes – in the winter it gets cold so I tend to wear a boot, otherwise I need a bit of a heel everyday to pull the look together.
You always wear pants so well! How do you make pants look so cool?
Pants are a staple in my wardrobe. I’ve always tended to pick pants over skirts or dresses, I think for various reasons. There are so many style options and silhouettes, and to me, they are more comfortable and keep me warm!
I love pairing pants with heels and I think it automatically gives any look a more sophisticated edge.
Do you have any fashion advice for women in Silicon Valley who might want to take a more daring or interesting approach to how they dress for work?
Go for it! You should love what you wear everyday: you’re going to be stuck in it for several hours. If you like bolder colors, prints or cuts start out by incorporating a unique top or blazer into your wardrobe and build on that.
Does your outfit play a role in how you feel at work?
Of course! I think how you feel before you even get to work plays a huge role in your attitude the rest of the day. So if you love how you feel when you’re walking out the door that attitude is likely to radiate into your work environment.
What is one specific thing you do that helps you like yourself and your life?
I try and be active everyday – exercising makes me feel centered and in control of my health.
